A member of the anti-pipeline group ResistAIM told The Peekskill Post Thursday that Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand are not doing everything in their power to stop Spectra Energy’s Algonquin Incremental (AIM) pipeline, a portion of which runs though Peekskill.

“Schumer and Gillibrand are influential and we are confident that they could do more than they are doing now to stop the pipeline,” said Patrick Robbins, who works as a coordinator with Resist AIM. “They have come out on paper writing to FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) calling for a stop work order, but we still have not seen them come out publicly against it. Will they hold a press conference with other senators along the pipeline route? “They didn’t send anyone down for the press conference we had in front of their offices last week and we feel as though they need to get serious to protect the people of New York State.”

In response, Jason Kaplan, a spokesman for Sen. Schumer, said the following in an email to The Peekskill Post:

“Senator Schumer has repeatedly and clearly expressed his opposition to the Algonquin gas pipeline because it poses a serious threat to the health and safety of residents and our environment across the Hudson Valley and New York State.”

Robbins added that Resist AIM is also calling on Schumer and Gillibrand, both Democrats, to open up a Government Accountability Office investigation into the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission “because these projects keep happening and eventually somebody is going to have to put the brakes on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.”

“We know that Spectra wants to be running gas through the pipeline by Nov. 1, so we feel like time is running out on this issue,” he said.

  30. Thank you for another magnificent article. Where else could anybody get that kind of information in such a perfect method of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m at the look for such info.

  31. Senator Schumer is actually NOT doing enough. He came out in a Hudson Valley newspaper opposing the pipeline on May 20th, and only because we consistently called him, finally put his opposition into the FERC docket over a month later. That is what made it official on paper. Since then, he’s done nothing. We know Schumer has the power with his position to meet with Norman Bay, the head commissioner at FERC and push him to stop this pipeline. Spectra Energy has consistently given the finger to our local government who have called to halt the project: Cuomo, Schumer, Gillibrand, DEC, Dept of Health, Dept Homeland Security, DPS, Mayors, Town Councils all say NO and they work anyway. Why are we putting up w these Texas bullies who just want to export this gas? New England even said they don’t want or need it. It’s all a game to export for private profit.

  32. I’m one of the Montrose 9 who was arrested and pled Not Guilty (in Nov. 2015) due to the necessity of the greater harm that is now being seen of allowing this Spectra Pipeline to go through Westchester County. While we are still awaiting Judge McCarthy’s verdict, I (who live in Hastings-on-Hudson) see the horrifying toll this pipeline is taking on the frontline communities. I no longer feel it necessary to be nice to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand. As Schumer’s employee said, he DID write a very strong letter asking FERC to stop this work until an independent look at the environmental and physical dangers could be done. However, that’s it. As far as I know neither Schumer or Gillibrand have ever come to Peekskill to see the damage. And even more shocking is that Gov. Cuomo (who lives in Westchester) has never come to the frontline communities to speak out against this. We now know that Rob Astorino took money (via his election campaign) from Spectra Energy and it now looks like this may be the case with Gov. Cuomo. Why did he nix the Constitution Pipeline and not this Spectra Pipeline 105 feet from Indian Point?
