In a press release last week, the Peekskill Democrats urged Peekskill Mayor Frank Catalina and Chief of Police Eric Johansen to join them in supporting the “Statue of Liberty Standard,” which states, in part, “that our community is a safe place for everyone, no matter their creed, color, orientation or documentation…We look forward to working with the mayor and the police department to confirm that our practices are consistent with these principles.”

When asked about the statement, and if he took it to mean that the Democrats are calling on Peekskill to be declared a sanctuary city, Johansen said the following:

“I, too, am committed to maintaining public safety and will continue to honor the oath of office that I swore to uphold, the Constitution of the United States of America, and the laws of the State of New York and the Charter of the City of Peekskill.”
