With the majority of the players on Peekskill’s girls basketball team underclassmen, a lot has fallen on the shoulders of Lady Red Devil senior Nyrie Holliman, and she has not disappointed.

In No. 11 Peekskill’s Section 1 Class A out-bracket game against visiting No. 22 Nanuet on Thursday, Holliman scored a team-high 16 points, including six in the final quarter, in leading her team to a 62-51 victory.

The win sends Peekskill (11-9) to No. 6 Tappan Zee (12-8) in a first-round contest at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18.

With a hard-charging Nanuet squad attempting to get back in the game in the final quarter, Holliman stopped the Golden Knights’ momentum in its tracks when she calmly sank a three-pointer from the corner that found nothing but net with two minutes remaining, giving Peekskill a 58-44 lead.

Then, with 1:14 left in the game, Holliman stepped to the foul line and made two clutch foul shots, putting Peekskill up 60-47.

On Nanuet’s next possession, she showed that she can excel on the other end of the floor as well, by coming up with a key defensive rebound. Holliman followed that by making another foul shot, giving the Lady Red Devils a 61-47 advantage.

The game started off as a nip and tuck affair, with Peekskill leading 16-14 at the end of the first quarter after a three-pointer by Nanuet at the buzzer.

Niya Fields led the Lady Red Devils in the opening quarter by scoring six of her nine points in that stanza.

Peekskill took hold of the game in the second quarter by outscoring the visitors 21-2, thanks to an efficient offensive attack to go along with a tenacious defensive effort.

Akua Yeboah paced the Lady Red Devils in that quarter, when she scored six of her 14 points in it, which helped give Peekskill a 37-16 halftime lead.

That lead was punctuated by a beautiful, text book 3-pointer from Annaleise Harvey (5 points), which went off the glass and in, with just seven seconds remaining before the end of the opening half.

Harvey’s shot sent the John Devins Gymnasium crowd into a frenzy, which celebrated to the tunes provided by D.J. extrodanaire and Peekskill graduate Pete Peterson.

Adrianna Parks (9 points), Krista Godbee (4 points), Mya Smith (3 points) and Sandra Murphy (2 points) also got into the scoring column for the Lady Red Devils and forward Tatyanna Arceneaux provided big plays as well.

Guiding the lady Red Devils are head coach Jimmy Robinson and assistant coach Vernon (Kiki) Merriweather, both PHS grads.
